Your email list is your most valuable asset as an author. Learn the exact strategies I use to grow my list, engage subscribers, and turn readers into superfans who buy every release.
Building Your Author Email List: The Strategy That Sells Books
If I could go back in time and give myself one piece of advice as a new author, it would be this: start building your email list yesterday.
Social media algorithms change. Amazon's visibility rules shift. BookTok trends come and go. But your email list? That's yours. No algorithm can take it away, no platform change can hide your messages, and no competitor can outbid you for access to your own readers.
Here's exactly how I built my list and how you can too.
Why Email Beats Everything Else
Let me give you the numbers that convinced me:
- Email open rates for authors: 25-40% (mine averages 33%)
- Social media organic reach: 2-5% of your followers
- Email click-through rates: 2-5%
- Social media click-through rates: 0.5-1%
When I send an email to my list on launch day, a third of my subscribers see it. When I post on social media, maybe 1 in 20 followers sees it. The math is clear.
Step 1: Create an Irresistible Reader Magnet
A reader magnet is a free book, novella, or bonus content that readers receive in exchange for their email address. It's the foundation of your list-building strategy.
What makes a great reader magnet:
- It's directly related to your published books (a prequel, a bonus epilogue, or the first book in your series)
- It showcases your writing voice and style
- It leaves readers wanting more
I use The First Acquisition—the first book in my Manhattan Money Kings series—as my reader magnet. Giving away a full novel might seem generous, but the strategy is simple: if readers love book one, they'll buy books two, three, and four.
Step 2: Deliver It Through BookFunnel
BookFunnel is the industry standard for delivering reader magnets. It handles the file delivery, provides readers with format options (Kindle, ePub, PDF), and integrates directly with your email service.
My setup:
- BookFunnel landing page with professional design
- Connected to MailerLite for automatic subscriber addition
- Readers get the book instantly after confirming their email
Step 3: Put Your Signup Everywhere
Your reader magnet link should be impossible to miss:
- Your website: Homepage hero section, dedicated free book page, footer, sidebar, pop-up
- Your books: Back matter of every book (this is your highest-converting placement)
- Social media: Link in bio, pinned posts, regular mentions
- Cross-promotions: Newsletter swaps with other romance authors
- BookFunnel group promotions: Participate in genre-specific giveaways
Step 4: Email Consistently (But Don't Spam)
Once someone joins your list, you need to keep them engaged. Here's my email schedule:
- Welcome sequence (automated): 3-4 emails over the first two weeks introducing myself, my books, and what subscribers can expect
- Regular newsletters: Every 2-3 weeks with a mix of personal updates, book recommendations, writing insights, and exclusive content
- Launch emails: A sequence of 3-5 emails around each new release
The golden rule: Every email should provide value. If you're only emailing to say "buy my book," you'll lose subscribers fast.
Step 5: Segment and Personalize
Not all subscribers are the same. Some are voracious readers who want every update. Others prefer monthly digests. Use your email service's segmentation features to:
- Tag subscribers by how they joined (reader magnet, website, cross-promo)
- Track engagement (opens, clicks) and adjust frequency
- Send targeted emails based on reading preferences
The Numbers Game
Growing an email list is a marathon, not a sprint. Here's what realistic growth looks like:
- Month 1-3: 100-500 subscribers (mostly from your existing network and reader magnet)
- Month 4-12: 500-2,000 subscribers (as you add more books and cross-promote)
- Year 2+: 2,000-10,000+ subscribers (compounding growth from backlist and word of mouth)
I'm currently at 1,763 subscribers, and every single one of them is more valuable to my career than a thousand social media followers.
